"If I were truly submitted to God, I wouldn't feel this anxious or overwhelmed."
How it sounds in your head: I pray, I read Scripture, but I still wake up with my chest tight, mind racing. If I really trusted God, wouldn't I have peace? This anxiety must mean I'm not surrendered enough. I need to trust Him MORE.
"The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
-- Psalm 34:18Source: religious teaching that anxiety is evidence of weak faith, making mental health struggles a spiritual failure.
She's heard 'Do not be anxious' weaponized as a command she's failing. She's read the 'peace that surpasses understanding' verses and feels condemned because her understanding feels FULL of anxiety. She assumes her struggle means her faith is broken.
Elijah called down fire from heaven, defeated 450 prophets of Baal, then got ONE THREAT from Jezebel and collapsed in suicidal depression, begging God to let him die. God didn't rebuke him for weak faith. He sent an ANGEL with FOOD, let him SLEEP, then spoke gently. From suicidal prophet to recommissioned in ONE CONVERSATION.
I REFUSE the lie that my anxiety proves weak faith or lack of submission. IT IS WRITTEN that the Lord is NEAR to the brokenhearted, which means my overwhelm doesn't push Him away—it draws Him CLOSE. I am not BECOMING peaceful enough to earn His presence; I REST in His presence, and peace flows FROM that. IT IS WRITTEN to cast ALL my anxiety on Him because He CARES for me—not 'stop being anxious,' but CAST IT, which means bring it TO Him, not hide it FROM Him. My mental health struggles don't disqualify me from His blessing. The BARAK operated even when God's people were TERRIFIED and OVERWHELMED.
The Father doesn't look at your anxiety and sigh in disappointment. He looks at your anxiety and says, 'Come here, beloved. Let Me hold that.' He's not waiting for you to be calm enough to approach Him. He's running toward you IN your panic attack, IN your 3 a.m. spiral, IN your overwhelm—not after you've pulled it together, but WHILE you're falling apart.
