"If I want nice things, I'm being greedy and selfish"
How it sounds in your head: Every time I want something—new shoes, a better phone, clothes that actually fit—I feel selfish. Like good Christians shouldn't want things for themselves. Maybe desire itself is the problem.
"Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart."
-- Psalm 37:4Source: Religion shaming desire and confusing wanting provision with the sin of covetousness or idolatry.
Adults have labeled her wants as 'greedy' or 'spoiled,' so she's learned to suppress desire altogether. She thinks wanting anything for herself means she's not thinking about others or God, so desire feels sinful.
Solomon asked for wisdom, and God said, 'Because you didn't ask for riches, I'm giving you riches AND honor anyway—more than any king.' God gave him what he didn't even ask for because God LOVES generous giving beyond our requests.
I REFUSE the lie that wanting nice things makes me greedy. IT IS WRITTEN that God gives me the DESIRES of my heart when I delight in Him. My desires aren't shameful—they're signposts to what my Father wants to provide. IT IS WRITTEN in James 1:17 that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father. The BARAK blessing means I'm blessed coming in and going out, in the city and the field. God commanded blessing on my storehouses. I receive abundantly because my Father is a generous giver who loves seeing His daughter flourish.
Your Father isn't rolling His eyes at your desires—He's the One who planted them in your heart. He's already running toward you with gifts you haven't even asked for yet because giving good things to His kids is who He is.
