"If I slip once, all my years of sobriety are erased. I'm back to zero."
How it sounds in your head: I've been clean for 20 years. But if I take one pill, one drink, it's like I never quit. All that progress—GONE. I'll die a failure. One mistake and decades mean nothing.
"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus."
-- Romans 8:1Source: works-based recovery theology that measures righteousness by streak count instead of Christ's finished work.
He's heard it in meetings for decades—'relapse erases your time.' His sobriety chip is his badge of honor. One slip feels like losing his identity. The scoreboard mentality makes grace conditional on performance.
Peter denied Jesus THREE TIMES—the ultimate failure after THREE YEARS following Him. After the resurrection, Jesus didn't make him start over or earn his way back. He IMMEDIATELY reinstated him, asked 'Do you love Me?' three times (restoring what was broken), and gave him the keys to feed His sheep—no probation period.
I REFUSE the lie that my worth is measured by my streak. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO CONDEMNATION for those in Christ Jesus. My righteousness is not my sobriety count—it's the FINISHED WORK of the cross. If I stumble, I am not back to zero—I am still SEATED in heavenly places (Eph 2:6). IT IS WRITTEN in Proverbs 24:16 that 'a righteous man falls seven times and rises again.' Falling doesn't erase my identity. I rise because I'm IN CHRIST, not because I'm perfect. The BARAK blessing protects me EVEN when I fail.
The Father doesn't have a scoreboard—He has a ROBE. The prodigal didn't earn his way back into sonship—he was RUNNING toward the Father in his filth and the Father RAN FASTER. One moment of weakness doesn't reset your relationship with God—it reveals His faithfulness.
