"I can never fully trust myself—I might relapse anytime."
How it sounds in your head: Even after 30 years clean, you second-guess yourself. 'What if I lose it? What if stress triggers me? What if dementia removes my inhibitions?' At 85, you don't trust your own mind. One bad day and the monster could wake up.
"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."
-- Philippians 1:6Self-focused theology that makes YOU the source of strength instead of Christ + enemy fear.
You HAVE failed before. You know your weaknesses. Your mind IS less sharp. Self-trust feels dangerous—you've proven you can't rely on yourself. Vigilance is survival.
John Mark DESERTED Paul and Barnabas mid-mission—total failure, Paul refused to take him again. Years later, Paul writes, 'Get Mark and bring him, for he is USEFUL to me for ministry.' Total restoration. God completed the work Paul doubted. Mark wrote a GOSPEL.
I REFUSE the lie that I can't trust myself. IT IS WRITTEN that HE who began a good work in me will COMPLETE it—my sobriety is sustained by HIS faithfulness, not my vigilance. I am not the source; Christ is. IT IS WRITTEN that He is ABLE to keep me from stumbling and present me faultless. I don't rely on my strength; I abide in HIS. Like John Mark went from failure to gospel writer, God's grip on me is UNBREAKABLE. I trust the VINE, not the branch. The BARAK blessing surrounds me—I am kept, guarded, and secure in His love. Nothing can snatch me from His hand.
The Father isn't wringing His hands wondering if you'll make it. He's the one HOLDING you—Jude 24 says He KEEPS you from falling. You're not keeping yourself; He is. Rest in HIS grip, not yours.
