"If I set boundaries with my parents, I'm selfish, unloving, and abandoning them like they abandoned me."
How it sounds in your head: Every time I try to protect myself—limiting visits, not answering every call—I feel crushing guilt. Am I becoming like them? Boundaries feel mean. They're getting older, and what if I regret this? Maybe I'm being too sensitive, holding grudges, choosing unforgiveness over family.
"Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life."
-- Proverbs 4:23Source: religious guilt weaponizing 'honor' and 'love' to keep you in toxic dynamics, making self-protection feel like sin.
Church culture preaches unconditional availability, especially to family. When you enforce limits, they play victim, and you're left questioning if you're the problem. Boundaries feel selfish because you've been trained that your needs don't matter compared to keeping peace.
Jesus' family came demanding to see Him, likely thinking He was out of His mind (v.21). His response? 'Who is My mother, or My brothers?' and pointed to His disciples. He SET A BOUNDARY with family, prioritizing mission and spiritual family over biological obligation—and it was RIGHTEOUS.
I REFUSE the lie that boundaries are selfish or unloving. IT IS WRITTEN to GUARD my heart with ALL DILIGENCE because out of it flows LIFE. Jesus set boundaries with His own family. I am not abandoning my parents; I am STEWARDING the life God gave me. IT IS WRITTEN that each person bears their own load—I'm not responsible for their emotions at the expense of my health. The BARAK blessing includes PEACE, and I protect that peace with WISDOM. Boundaries are LOVE—love for myself as God's daughter, love for them by not enabling, love for my future family by breaking cycles. I am not selfish. I am WISE, PROTECTED, and FREE.
The Father is standing BETWEEN you and them, saying 'You are not obligated to set yourself on fire to keep them warm. I'm so proud of you for valuing the life I gave you enough to protect it. Those boundaries? That's you finally acting like the DAUGHTER you are instead of the servant they made you. Keep going. I've got your back.'
