"I have to forgive my parents before God will bless me or answer my prayers. My unforgiveness is blocking everything."
How it sounds in your head: Every sermon says it—forgive or you won't be forgiven. My bitterness toward them is a wall between me and God. Until I can genuinely forgive what they did, I'm stuck. My prayers bounce off the ceiling.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Religion mixing Old Covenant conditional forgiveness with New Covenant grace, putting earning requirement on what Jesus already purchased.
Jesus said 'forgive us as we forgive others' and taught that we must forgive to be forgiven. Your unforgiveness feels like acid in your soul, and nothing seems to be working in your life—obviously the blockage is real.
Dying criminal who had forgiven nobody, made no restitution, couldn't make anything right. Believed in Jesus and got INSTANT paradise—'TODAY you will be with Me in Paradise'—without forgiving his crucifiers or the other thief or anyone he'd wronged.
I REFUSE the lie that my forgiveness toward others determines God's forgiveness toward me. IT IS WRITTEN: He has ALREADY forgiven me ALL trespasses—past, present, future—because of the CROSS, not my performance. I am FREE to release my parents not because I 'have to' but because I GET to walk in the freedom Jesus already purchased. My bitterness doesn't block God's blessing—IT IS WRITTEN: He forgave me while I was DEAD in sin, before I forgave anyone. The BARAK rests on me by COVENANT, not behavior. I'm blessed coming in and going out, regardless of my emotional process with my parents.
Your Father isn't holding His blessing hostage until you 'feel' forgiveness toward your parents. He poured out EVERYTHING at the cross before you forgave anyone—He's just inviting you into the freedom that's already yours, whenever you're ready to receive it.
