"If I go back to church, they'll expect me to be someone I'm not."
How it sounds in your head: I can't fake the smile anymore. I can't pretend I have it together. They'll want me in a suit with a clean testimony, serving on Sunday, small group on Wednesday, perfectly behaved kids. I'm divorced, I drink occasionally, I voted differently than the pastor. I don't fit the mold.
"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."
-- Galatians 2:20Source: Religious culture demanded conformity to external standards, now enemy says you must perform to belong.
You saw people put on masks and perform, and you felt pressure to do the same. Authenticity was met with correction rather than compassion when you tried it.
Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector—traitor to his people, extortionist, wealthy from corruption. Jesus invited HIMSELF to Zacchaeus's house while religious people grumbled. Zacchaeus changed BECAUSE he was accepted, not to BE accepted. Jesus said 'Today salvation has come to this house.' Instant belonging, THEN transformation.
I REFUSE the lie that I must perform to belong. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ lives IN me and I am crucified with Him—my identity is GIFT, not achievement. IT IS WRITTEN there is NO CONDEMNATION for those in Christ. I come as I am, smelling like pigs, and the Father is already running toward me with the robe and ring. Like Zacchaeus the extortionist, I'm accepted BEFORE I clean up. I am the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God in Christ—not by behavior but by BLOOD. The BARAK blessing is mine by covenant, just as it covered Abraham the liar and Jacob the deceiver. I'm a branch attached to the Vine. Fruit comes from abiding, not striving.
The Father is demolishing the religious mask and inviting you to bring your real face. He's been waiting for the real you, not the performed version. Transformation is HIS job; surrender is yours. Come messy. He's already prepared the party.
