"If I don't protect myself, no one else will. I have to be tough and closed off."
How it sounds in your head: You've been hurt before. Trusting people got you betrayed, rejected, or abandoned. The only way to survive is to build walls, trust no one, show no weakness. Love is a trap that makes you vulnerable to more pain.
"The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
-- Psalm 34:18Trauma response calcifying into permanent defensive posture, making intimacy impossible and confirming 'unlovable' through isolation.
You HAVE been hurt when you were vulnerable. Opening up DID lead to pain. The walls have kept you safer than trust did. This is survival math that makes perfect sense.
Jacob spent decades protecting himself through manipulation and control after Esau threatened to kill him. God met him alone at night and WRESTLED him until Jacob's hip was dislocated—forced vulnerability. In his weakness, God BLESSED him and changed his name to Israel. Breakthrough came through forced openness, not toughness.
I REFUSE the lie that I must stay closed off to survive. IT IS WRITTEN that God is NEAR to the brokenhearted—not near to those who hold it together. IT IS WRITTEN that He heals the brokenhearted and binds their wounds. I am Abraham's seed—the BARAK blessing protected Jacob when he was vulnerable and wrestling God. Walls keep pain out but also keep love out. My Father is SAFE. He's not another person who will hurt me. He's the Father who runs toward broken sons, not away. I can be vulnerable because HE is my protection.
The Father sees the walls you've built and understands why they're there. But He's not trying to scale them or break them down violently—He's gently inviting you to open the door from inside, where He's been waiting to show you safe love EXISTS.
