"I wasn't a good enough Christian. I should have done more for God when I had the chance."
How it sounds in your head: You should have shared your faith more. Should have gone on that mission trip. Should have tithed more consistently. Should have served more, given more, been more on fire. Others did great things for God. You just showed up. You were a mediocre Christian at best, and now it's too late to make up for it.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
-- Ephesians 2:8-9Religious performance measurement creating shame over perceived insufficient service activity.
He's comparing his Christian life to idealized testimonies and finding it ordinary, sparse, unremarkable. Every 'should have' feels like evidence that his Christianity was inadequate, creating fear that God is disappointed at life's end.
Joseph was a SECRET disciple for years, hiding his faith out of fear. He never preached, never did miracles, never appeared in Jesus's ministry. Then at the crucifixion, he finally stepped forward and gave his tomb. That ONE ACT of faithfulness put him in all four gospels forever. God didn't need his whole life - He needed his YES in the moment that mattered.
I REFUSE the lie that God measures me by Christian activity. IT IS WRITTEN that by GRACE I've been saved, NOT OF WORKS, lest anyone should boast. My acceptance isn't based on ministry resume - it's based on JESUS'S finished work. IT IS WRITTEN that the reward is 'good and FAITHFUL,' not 'impressive and accomplished.' Joseph of Arimathea was a SECRET BELIEVER for years, then gave his tomb - one act of faithfulness put him in all four gospels. God doesn't need my whole life to be spectacular - He needs my FAITHFULNESS with what I had. The BARAK blessing on Abraham wasn't performance-based - it was COVENANT-based. I'm in the BETTER covenant. I am ACCEPTED IN THE BELOVED, not accepted in my activity level.
The Father is running toward you not reviewing your ministry resume but throwing a party for His son coming home. He's saying, 'You think I wanted your WORK. I wanted YOUR HEART. You gave Me that. That's everything. Welcome home, GOOD and FAITHFUL servant.'
