"I was stupid to trust them - this pain is my own fault for being naive."
How it sounds in your head: At my age, I should have known better. I've lived through enough to recognize manipulation. I'm embarrassed that I fell for it. This humiliation is deserved - I brought this on myself by being too trusting.
"They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed."
-- Psalm 34:5Religious teaching that suffering is always self-inflicted and shame is appropriate for 'poor choices.'
Age creates an expectation of wisdom, making trust that leads to betrayal feel like personal failure rather than another's sin.
David's trusted counselor Ahithophel betrayed him to join Absalom's rebellion. David didn't blame himself for trusting - he prayed one prayer asking God to turn Ahithophel's counsel to foolishness. God IMMEDIATELY answered - Ahithophel's advice was rejected, he went home and hanged himself, and David was restored to the throne.
I REFUSE the lie that trusting makes me stupid. IT IS WRITTEN that those who look to Him are RADIANT and NOT ashamed - and I am radiant RIGHT NOW. My willingness to trust reflects the Father's heart, not a character flaw. IT IS WRITTEN that I am the righteousness of God in Christ - that means my trust was RIGHTEOUS, even if their response was wicked. The shame belongs to the betrayer, not to me. I am the head and not the tail, blessed in my discernment, and the Father is ALREADY turning this betrayal into breakthrough. I am NOT ashamed.
The Father sees your humiliation and says 'You look like Me when you trust - and I'm PROUD of you.' He's not embarrassed by your vulnerability. He's enraged at the one who weaponized it. You didn't fail. You loved like Heaven loves. That's never stupid.
