"I took the Lord's name in vain so many times, I've broken a commandment permanently."
How it sounds in your head: Growing up, in the military, at work—I've used God's name as a curse word hundreds, maybe thousands of times. That's one of the Ten Commandments. How can God overlook that level of disrespect?
"having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:14Source: Religious teaching that the Ten Commandments are a performance checklist instead of revelation of need for grace.
The sheer volume of times you've done it makes it feel insurmountable, and Old Testament severity around God's name makes you fear you've racked up eternal consequences.
This criminal had lived an entire life of crime, blasphemy, and godlessness—likely used God's name in vain thousands of times. One moment of belief, one request, and Jesus said 'TODAY you will be with Me in Paradise'—full forgiveness, instant heaven, zero process.
I REFUSE the lie that my repeated misuse of God's name has built a wall between us. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus wiped out the handwriting of requirements against me, nailing every offense to the cross. The thief on the cross had a lifetime of blasphemy and was in Paradise that same day. IT IS WRITTEN there is no condemnation for those in Christ. I am blessed under the BARAK covenant of grace, not the law of performance. The enemy wants me paralyzed by a list. I am FORGIVEN, my record ERASED, and the Father calls me by NAME—His son.
Your Father isn't keeping a tally of how many times you misused His name. He's keeping a robe with YOUR name on it, waiting to wrap you in honor—because He doesn't respond based on your record, but based on His nature, and His nature is LOVE.
