"I took God's name in vain my whole life. That's the one commandment that says He won't hold you guiltless."
How it sounds in your head: Exodus 20:7 is clear—'The LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.' I used His name as a curse word for decades. I mocked Him. That's the one sin He specifically said He won't let go. I'm guilty and He won't acquit me.
"Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us."
-- Romans 8:33-34Source: Old Covenant law applied to New Covenant believers, ignoring the blood of Jesus that makes us guiltless before God.
It's right there in the Ten Commandments with a specific consequence. You've heard the phrase 'God won't hold you guiltless' attached to this sin your whole life, and decades of casual blasphemy feel like a mountain of guilt.
Paul was a 'blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man'—he didn't just take God's name in vain; he actively blasphemed and murdered Christians. Yet he writes 'I obtained MERCY' and became the primary author of the New Testament and apostle to the Gentiles. From blasphemer to apostle—instant, complete transformation.
I REFUSE the lie that Old Covenant warnings override New Covenant blood. IT IS WRITTEN: 'Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is GOD who justifies.' Yes, Exodus says He won't hold guiltless—and He DIDN'T. He held JESUS guilty in my place. IT IS WRITTEN that He made Jesus to be SIN for us so we might become the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God in Him. My guilt was transferred to Christ; His righteousness was transferred to me. Paul was a BLASPHEMER and obtained MERCY. I obtain that same mercy NOW. The Father looks at me and sees me clothed in the righteousness of Christ—guiltless, blameless, holy, and dearly loved.
The Father isn't holding your decades of careless words against you. He held them against Jesus on the cross—Jesus became your curse, took your guilt, and satisfied the wrath you deserved—and now when the Father looks at you, He sees you covered in the righteousness of His Son.
