"I should have taken better care of myself; this disability is my fault."
How it sounds in your head: If you'd exercised more, eaten better, been more careful, maybe this wouldn't have happened. You replay decisions, wondering if this limitation is just consequence for not being disciplined enough. Self-blame feels like the most honest explanation.
"He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities."
-- Psalm 103:10Religion + self: turns every hardship into deserved punishment, making you both prosecutor and condemned, forgetting that Jesus already took all consequence.
You can trace choices you made—or didn't make—and connect dots to your current condition. Medical professionals sometimes imply lifestyle choices caused this. Guilt feels appropriate, like accepting responsibility for outcomes.
Blind from birth, disciples asked whose sin caused it—his or his parents'? Jesus said NEITHER, shutting down the sin-causes-sickness theology. The man's condition existed 'that the works of God should be revealed in him,' and Jesus healed him instantly with mud and spit.
I REFUSE the lie that my disability is punishment for past choices or that I caused this through failure. IT IS WRITTEN that God does not deal with me according to my sins or punish me for my shortcomings—Jesus took ALL punishment. Like the man born blind, this isn't about sin; it's about showcasing God's power. I reject false guilt and shame. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:1 that there is NO CONDEMNATION for those in Christ—that includes condemnation I place on myself. I am covered by the BARAK blessing that protected Abraham even when he LIED twice, and I receive restoration and healing as GIFT, not earned outcome. I walk in grace and freedom from self-condemnation today.
Your Father isn't reviewing your past choices with a red pen, tallying mistakes that 'earned' this limitation—He's covering you with grace, declaring NO CONDEMNATION, running toward you with healing that has nothing to do with whether you ate enough vegetables or exercised enough. His love isn't conditional on your self-care record.
