"I should be past these struggles by now; something's wrong with my walk with God."
How it sounds in your head: After decades as a Christian, I shouldn't still be battling the same temptations, same doubts, same weaknesses. Young believers struggle, but at my age and experience level, I should have conquered this by now. My ongoing battles prove I'm spiritually defective.
"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."
-- Philippians 1:6Source: Religion's sanctification ladder that measures spiritual progress by struggle elimination rather than by abiding in Christ's finished work.
Church discipleship models present Christian growth as a linear progression toward sinless perfection—the longer you walk with God, the fewer struggles you should have. Ongoing battles at your age feel like evidence you flunked spiritual advancement while others graduated.
After decades of walking with God, multiple encounters with Him, receiving the covenant promise, Abraham STILL lied about Sarah being his sister to protect himself. God didn't revoke the blessing or say 'you should be past this'—He defended Abraham, plagued the king, and Abraham left RICHER. The BARAK wasn't canceled by ongoing struggles.
I REFUSE the lie that ongoing struggles prove spiritual deficiency. IT IS WRITTEN that HE who began the work in me will COMPLETE it—sanctification is His job, not my report card. Abraham lied about Sarah AFTER decades with God and the BARAK still protected him. IT IS WRITTEN that Paul called himself chief of sinners while writing Scripture—present tense struggle, permanent acceptance. I am Abraham's seed, covered by a COVENANT blessing that didn't require perfect behavior. My Father completes the work; I abide in the Vine. Maturity is trusting His grace MID-STRUGGLE, not pretending struggles ended.
Your Father doesn't look at your decades of walking with Him and expect perfection—He's the One completing the work in you, not grading your self-improvement project. Abraham lied in old age and God still called him His friend; ongoing struggles don't disqualify you from ongoing blessing.
