"I repeated my parents' mistakes, so I'm no better than they were"
How it sounds in your head: You swore you'd never yell like your dad, never withdraw like your mom—and then you did. You see their patterns in your parenting, your marriage, your reactions. At 85, looking back at decades of choices, the evidence is damning: you became what you hated. You're just another link in a broken chain.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:17Enemy: Uses human failure to erase divine transformation, making you see continuity of sin instead of new creation reality
Your kids could tell stories that sound like your childhood. You lost your temper, you were absent, you prioritized work—echoes of your own upbringing. The neural pathways and coping mechanisms proved stronger than your intentions.
Asa's father Abijah did evil, and his grandmother Maacah made obscene idols. Asa 'did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did his father David' (skipping two generations to find a good example). He even removed his grandmother from being queen mother because of her idolatry. God said his 'heart was loyal all his days'—DESPITE one generation prior being wicked.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm 'no better than they were.' IT IS WRITTEN: I am a NEW CREATION in Christ; old things PASSED AWAY. I am not defined by patterns I repeated—I am defined by the BLOOD that makes me new. Every failure I had as a father was covered at Calvary, and my kids are not doomed by my mistakes any more than I was doomed by my parents'. IT IS WRITTEN: As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed my transgressions. The BARAK blessing covers my family line—my children are BLESSED regardless of my failures. At 85, I see myself as God does: NEW, not a repeat.
Your Father doesn't keep a scorecard comparing your failures to your parents' failures. He sees you washed white, and when He looks at your parenting, He sees a man who brought his kids TO the cross even when he stumbled. You broke the chain whether you felt like it or not—you're in Christ, and that changes EVERYTHING.
