"I need to keep punishing myself to show God I'm really sorry."
How it sounds in your head: If I just move on and feel happy, it's like what I did didn't matter. Staying miserable proves I take this seriously and won't do it again.
"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed."
-- Isaiah 53:5Religious works-based thinking that suffering earns God's approval, making her believe penance is required alongside the cross.
She equates self-punishment with repentance and thinks releasing guilt would dishonor the seriousness of her sin. Pain feels like payment.
She was caught in the very ACT of adultery and dragged before Jesus expecting stoning. Jesus didn't give her a punishment plan or probation period—He said, 'Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.' No penance, just release.
I REFUSE the lie that I must punish myself to prove repentance. IT IS WRITTEN that the chastisement for my peace was upon JESUS, not me. His suffering was complete and sufficient. IT IS WRITTEN that He has perfected me forever by one offering. My misery doesn't honor His sacrifice—my freedom does. The BARAK blessing covers me even when I fail because it's based on covenant, not conduct. I receive His finished work and walk in peace.
The Father isn't asking you to suffer to prove you're sorry—He's asking you to believe that Jesus suffered enough for both of you. Your joy honors the price He paid.
