"I need to honor my father and mother even when they're destroying me."

How it sounds in your head: The Bible says 'honor your father and mother,' so even when dad's drunk or mom's screaming, I'm supposed to just take it and respect them. If I set boundaries, I'm dishonoring them and sinning against God.

Mark 7:9-13

"He said to them, 'All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition... making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down.'"

-- Mark 7:9-13
Enemy whispers: Honor means absorb the abuse. BUT IT IS WRITTEN: Mark 7:9-13 - Jesus REBUKED the Pharisees for using 'honor your parents' to trap people in dysfunction. Honor doesn't mean enabling destruction. Jesus Himself set boundaries with His own mother (John 2:4) and called out Peter, His spiritual father-figure, saying 'Get behind Me, Satan' (Matthew 16:23). Honor means respecting their POSITION without accepting their POISON.
Quick Truth: LIE: Honor means absorb abuse. TRUTH: Jesus SET BOUNDARIES even with family. Honor respects position without accepting poison. (Mark 7:9-13, Proverbs 4:23)

Religion twisting 'honor' into 'absorb abuse,' blocking the protection and boundaries Jesus modeled.

Why this feels true:

It's the fifth commandment. Every authority figure quotes it. Pushing back feels like rebellion against God Himself, and the guilt is crushing.

1 Samuel 19:10-18
David

King Saul, the authority over David, literally threw a SPEAR at him trying to kill him. David didn't say 'I must honor authority and stay.' He RAN. He set a boundary. He escaped through a window and fled—and God blessed him, protected him, and eventually made him king.

Speak this out loud

I REFUSE the lie that honoring my parents means accepting their abuse. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus Himself SET BOUNDARIES, even with His own mother and His disciples. Honor doesn't mean I'm a punching bag—physically or emotionally. IT IS WRITTEN in Proverbs 4:23 to guard my heart above all else, for from it flow the springs of life. I can respect their position without absorbing their poison. God is not asking me to destroy myself to prop up their dysfunction. I am ALLOWED to be safe. I am ALLOWED to set boundaries. I honor them by refusing to enable what's destroying THEM and me. I am FREE to protect the life God gave me.

But God actually:

The Father is NOT asking you to stand in the fire to prove your obedience. He's the one who PROVIDES the escape route (1 Corinthians 10:13). He's not impressed by martyrdom; He's grieved watching you absorb wounds He never intended you to carry. You have PERMISSION to be safe.
