"I need to forgive everyone perfectly before I die or I won't be forgiven"
How it sounds in your head: Jesus said if I don't forgive others, He won't forgive me. I need to make sure I've released everyone who hurt me - the father who abused me, the husband who abandoned me, the friends who betrayed me - or I'll face judgment unforgiven.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you ALL trespasses."
-- Colossians 2:13Misapplication of Matthew 6:15 Old Covenant teaching without cross context + religious fear-mongering about conditional forgiveness.
She's heard Matthew 6:15 quoted hundreds of times - 'If you do not forgive, neither will your Father forgive' - and at life's end, the fear of unforgiven sin is overwhelming. Old wounds feel like eternal liabilities.
Peter denied Jesus three times with cursing and swearing - the ultimate betrayal of the One he loved. He never explicitly asked forgiveness or made restitution. Jesus appeared to him after resurrection and simply RESTORED him, asking 'Do you love Me?' three times and recommissioning him to feed His sheep - instant, complete, unconditional.
I REFUSE the lie that my forgiveness depends on my perfect forgiving! IT IS WRITTEN that He has ALREADY forgiven me ALL trespasses - past tense, finished at the cross. I forgive FROM the place of being forgiven, not TO EARN being forgiven. IT IS WRITTEN to forgive 'even AS God in Christ forgave you' - He went FIRST. My inability to perfectly release every wound does not block His finished forgiveness. I bring my broken attempts at forgiving TO Him, and His grace completes what I cannot. I am fully, finally, forever FORGIVEN!
The Father isn't holding your forgiveness hostage until you perform perfect forgiving - He forgave you FIRST while you were still His enemy. He knows the wounds are deep, and He's patient with your process, covering what you can't yet release.
