"I lost my early teens to church performance and religious pressure"
How it sounds in your head: I spent years trying to be the good Christian girl—saying the right things, hiding real questions, performing for youth group leaders. I missed actually knowing God because I was so busy trying to look godly. Those years of real relationship are gone.
"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified."
-- Galatians 2:16Religious system that taught her to perform righteousness instead of receiving it as a gift, making her relationship with God transactional.
She looks back at years of church activities and realizes she was performing, not connecting. She sees people who seem to have genuine faith and believes her years of religious performance created a deficit in real relationship with God that takes years to rebuild.
Spent years as the ultimate religious performer—Pharisee, persecuting Christians, thinking he was earning God's favor through zealous performance. One encounter on Damascus road and IMMEDIATELY he knew Jesus. Didn't take years to unlearn religion and build real relationship. Within days he was preaching Christ. From religious performer to intimate friend of Jesus in one blinding moment.
I REFUSE the lie that years of religious performance stole real relationship with God. IT IS WRITTEN that I am not justified by works but by FAITH in Jesus Christ—which means my relationship was never built on my performance in the first place. I am under the BARAK blessing that covered Abraham before he knew what he was doing. IT IS WRITTEN there is no condemnation for me in Christ Jesus. Like Paul went from religious performer to intimate friend of Jesus in one encounter, my real relationship is not years away; it's ALREADY mine. Like the woman caught in adultery received instant acceptance, I am received not after I unlearn performance but RIGHT NOW. I am the head and not the tail, received and not performing, loved and not measured—TODAY.
Your Father watched you perform in youth group and He wasn't grading you—He was waiting for the moment you'd realize you already had what you were trying so hard to earn. The real relationship isn't on the other side of unlearning; it's available right now, performance-free, in this moment.
