"I have to punish myself with exercise after eating too much."
How it sounds in your head: I ate too much at dinner, so I have to run it off. Extra workout to burn those calories. Exercise is my penance for eating. I can't rest until I've earned back the right to exist in this body.
"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit."
-- Romans 8:1Source: Fitness culture weaponized as penance, turning movement into punishment instead of celebration.
You see 'burn it to earn it' mantras everywhere, and apps literally tell you to 'work off' that meal, framing exercise as debt payment for daring to eat.
Jesus, in His RESURRECTED BODY, ate broiled fish and honeycomb in front of the disciples to prove He was real. The glorified Christ ATE for JOY, not to burn it off. Eating wasn't something to punish - it was proof of LIFE.
I REFUSE the lie that I must punish my body through exercise to atone for eating. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus - not in my eating, not in my body, not in my rest. The cross was the punishment; IT IS FINISHED. IT IS WRITTEN that harsh treatment of the body has no value - freedom comes through the Spirit, not through suffering. I move my body in CELEBRATION, not condemnation. The BARAK blessing covers my physical health. I am blessed in my movement and blessed in my rest. I exercise in JOY, not judgment.
Your Father doesn't want you on a treadmill earning back your worth after a meal. He wants you RESTING in the finished work of the cross, moving your body because it's ALIVE and CAPABLE, not because you're in debt. He's not tallying calories - He's delighting in His daughter.
