"I had an impure thought and God's blessing left me."
How it sounds in your head: A bad thought came into my head—something I'd be so embarrassed if anyone knew. Now I feel dirty and I'm scared God's presence left me. I don't feel close to Him anymore and I think it's because He saw what I thought.
"For He Himself has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'"
-- Hebrews 13:5Source: Purity culture that equates intrusive thoughts with willful sin and teaches that God's presence is conditional on mental perfection.
The thought felt shocking and shameful, and the distance she feels from God seems like proof He withdrew. She's been taught that purity is a prerequisite for God's presence.
David didn't just have an impure thought—he acted on it, committed adultery with Bathsheba, got her pregnant, then murdered her husband to cover it up. When confronted, he repented and God said 'The LORD has taken away your sin'—IMMEDIATELY. God didn't withdraw His presence; Psalm 51 shows David asking God not to take His Spirit, which means it was STILL THERE even after adultery and murder.
I REFUSE the lie that an impure thought made God leave me. IT IS WRITTEN that He will NEVER leave me nor forsake me—NEVER means not even when I have intrusive thoughts. God's presence is NOT based on my mental perfection; it's based on His PROMISE. IT IS WRITTEN that I have been made the righteousness of God in Christ. An intrusive thought is NOT my identity. I am ABRAHAM'S SEED, covered by the BARAK blessing, which protected Abraham even when he acted on fear. I am NOT separated from God. His presence is WITH me RIGHT NOW.
The Father isn't packing His bags because of a thought that flashed through your mind—He's the God who stayed with David through adultery and murder, who calls you righteous because of Jesus, not because of your thought life. The distance you feel is the enemy's lie; God is closer than your next breath.
