"I don't know how to connect with my kids emotionally."
How it sounds in your head: They need emotional availability and you weren't raised that way. Your dad didn't model it. You don't know what to say when they cry. You default to fixing problems instead of feeling with them. You're emotionally stunted and it's affecting your kids.
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."
-- Ezekiel 36:26Masculine identity lie that emotions equal weakness combined with lack of modeling from previous generation.
Your father was stoic or absent emotionally, and you have no template for emotional connection. You feel awkward during vulnerable moments and retreat to logic or solutions.
Jesus—fully God, all-powerful, KNEW He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead—still WEPT. He didn't skip the emotion to get to the solution. He felt WITH them before He fixed it. Emotional presence and power coexist.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm emotionally unavailable or incapable of connection. IT IS WRITTEN that God gave me a new heart and a new spirit, taking out the heart of stone and giving me a heart of FLESH. I am not limited by my father's emotional unavailability—I have the Spirit of the living God who FEELS deeply. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus wept, proving that strength and emotion coexist perfectly. My kids don't need me to have perfect words; they need me to be PRESENT, and I am learning to abide in the Vine where all fruit—including emotional availability—grows naturally. I am not broken. I am being transformed.
The Father isn't frustrated with your learning curve—He's gently teaching you to feel, coaching you in real-time. Every awkward attempt to connect emotionally with your kids is Him smiling, saying 'Good, you're learning to be like Me,' giving you HIS heart of flesh moment by moment.
