"I don't have the discipline or wisdom to steward wealth, so I don't deserve it."
How it sounds in your head: I've proven I can't be trusted with money. I'm impulsive, emotional, bad with numbers. Maybe God knows I'd just blow it again, so He's protecting me by keeping me from having more. I need to develop discipline first before I'm ready for increase.
"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:21Performance-based theology that makes blessing contingent on character development and self-control metrics.
Your bank account history shows impulsive purchases, blown budgets, and emotional spending. You genuinely don't trust yourself, so why would God? It feels responsible to acknowledge your weakness and wait until you've changed.
The prodigal had PROVEN he was a terrible steward—blew his entire inheritance on prostitutes and wild living. He returned as evidence of financial failure. The father gave him ring (authority over finances), robe (identity), and threw a party—INSTANT restoration despite proven lack of wisdom.
I REFUSE the lie that I must develop discipline before I deserve increase. IT IS WRITTEN that I AM the righteousness of God in Christ—not becoming, but AM. God doesn't withhold blessing until I prove I can handle it; He gives FIRST and wisdom comes FROM Him liberally without reproach. The prodigal proved he was a terrible steward and STILL got the ring of authority. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed, and the Lord commands blessing on my storehouses. My Father gives me the kingdom because it's His PLEASURE (Luke 12:32), not because I've mastered a budget. I walk in the BARAK blessing that protected Jacob the deceiver and Abraham the liar—blessing based on COVENANT, not competence.
Your Father isn't waiting for you to become financially disciplined before He trusts you—He gave the prodigal the ring AFTER he proved he couldn't be trusted. God's gifts aren't rewards for good behavior; they're expressions of His LAVISH nature toward His kids.
