"I chose career over motherhood and my kids paid the price for my ambition."
How it sounds in your head: You worked when you could have stayed home. You pursued your career while they needed you. You put your ambition ahead of their needs. The working mother guilt has followed you for decades, and now you can see the damage in their emotional distance.
"She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard."
-- Proverbs 31:16Cultural lie that mothers must sacrifice all personal calling to be acceptable, combined with false either/or thinking.
You can remember specific school events you missed, homework you didn't help with, dinners you didn't cook. Other mothers seemed more present, and their kids seem closer to them now.
She was a wife, prophet, judge of all Israel, and military commander who led armies to victory—managing national leadership while married. Scripture never suggests her marriage suffered or that she should have chosen one role over another.
I REFUSE the lie that my career ambitions damaged my children or disqualified me as a mother. IT IS WRITTEN that the Proverbs 31 woman bought fields, planted vineyards, and her children called her blessed—not despite her work but INCLUDING it. My calling to work was NOT rebellion against motherhood. IT IS WRITTEN in Psalm 139:16 that all my days were written in His book before one of them came to be—including my career path. The BARAK blessing covers my children, and their wholeness is not dependent on my constant physical presence. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and that identity includes BOTH mother and professional.
The Father never pitted your calling against your children—that's a false choice religion created to keep women contained. He designed you for both, and He's been present with your children in every moment you couldn't be, more than compensating with His perfect presence.
