"I can't forgive the church hurt, and that makes me a bad Christian."
How it sounds in your head: I know the sermons. 'Forgive as you've been forgiven.' 'Bitterness is poison.' I've tried. I've prayed. But when I think about what they did, the anger is still white-hot. I must not be spiritual enough if I can't let it go.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you ALL trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Source: Old Covenant forgiveness teaching that makes healing dependent on your ability to manufacture feelings of forgiveness, adding shame to wound.
The wound is REAL and deep, and religious pressure to 'forgive and move on' feels impossible. Your inability to feel forgiveness becomes evidence you're failing spiritually.
Peter DENIED Jesus three times, ran away, went back to fishing in shame. Jesus didn't lecture him about forgiving himself or demand he 'get over it.' He made him breakfast on the beach, restored him with three questions, and gave him his calling back. Restoration came BEFORE Peter felt worthy of it. Healing, not striving.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm a bad Christian because I can't manufacture forgiveness. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus forgave me ALL trespasses and nailed the handwriting of requirements to the cross. My healing is not dependent on my ability to feel forgiving. I am the righteousness of God in Christ—not because I'm emotionally healed, but because HE declared it. IT IS WRITTEN that I'm already forgiven, already accepted, already loved while I'm STILL processing pain. I declare the BARAK blessing over my healing journey—God is walking WITH me through anger into peace, not demanding I skip steps. Forgiveness is a GIFT I'll receive, not a work I must perform. My anger is VALID, and my Father is not disappointed in me.
Father isn't standing over you with a stopwatch waiting for you to forgive fast enough. He's sitting WITH you in the anger, validating every emotion, whispering 'I saw it too, and I'm furious on your behalf,' and gently leading you to the place where HIS healing makes forgiveness possible.
