"Hell is too barbaric for a loving God, so Christianity must be wrong."
How it sounds in your head: You can't reconcile infinite torture for finite sins with a God of love. It sounds more like an abusive dictator than a Father. Either God isn't loving or hell isn't real, and if hell isn't real, what else did they get wrong?
"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."
-- 2 Peter 3:9Medieval torture imagery replacing biblical understanding of judgment as separation from life source.
The doctrine of eternal conscious torment feels morally repugnant and incompatible with 'God is love.' You can't imagine torturing anyone forever, let alone a good God doing it, especially for thought crimes.
Jonah was angry because he knew God was 'gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.' Even the most toxic prophet knew God's heart bends toward mercy, not destruction.
I REFUSE the lie that hell reveals God as a sadistic torturer. IT IS WRITTEN that God is not willing that any should perish and takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. I reject medieval torture imagery that painted God as vengeful when Scripture reveals Him as the Father running toward prodigals. IT IS WRITTEN that God is love—not 'has love' but IS love—and whatever the doctrine of judgment means, it cannot contradict His essential nature. I declare that God's goodness is more foundational than my confusion about hell, and I trust His character even when I don't understand His justice.
The Father's heart breaks over every person who chooses separation from Him. He's not gleefully preparing torture chambers—He gave everything to provide escape, and He grieves every refusal of His rescue.
