"I've studied church history and it's just politics, power, and corruption."
How it sounds in your head: Constantine made Christianity the state religion for political control. Councils were power plays, not Holy Spirit guidance. The church burned scientists and justified slavery. It's just another human institution using God-talk to control people. Why should this generation's version be any different?
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it."
-- Matthew 16:18Enemy highlighting failures while hiding the billions fed, healed, educated, and freed by flawed-but-faithful saints.
You've learned about the Crusades, Inquisition, indulgences, abuse cover-ups. Church history includes genuine atrocities committed in Christ's name, and pretending otherwise is intellectually dishonest.
Jesus declared Peter the rock on which He'd build His church in verse 18, then called Peter 'Satan' in verse 23—five verses later. Jesus chose to build His church on spectacularly flawed leaders, fully aware of their failures.
I REFUSE the lie that church history's failures invalidate Christ's truth. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus will build His church and hell's gates won't prevail, even through corruption and failure. I acknowledge the genuine atrocities committed in Jesus' name—and I also recognize the billions educated, healed, and freed by imperfect Christians living out the Gospel. IT IS WRITTEN that we are earthen vessels, and God knew exactly what He was getting when He chose humans as His representatives. I declare the message stands separate from the messengers, and the Gospel's power to transform is proven by its fruit in millions of anonymous saints who loved well. The Father's faithfulness has preserved truth through 2,000 years of human failure.
The Father has watched His children misrepresent Him for millennia and grieves every abuse of His name. Yet He continues working through cracked vessels, and His message has survived every corrupt leader because it's sustained by His power, not human goodness.
