"Going to therapy or taking anxiety medication means I don't trust God with my mental health."
How it sounds in your head: Christians shouldn't need therapists - we have the Holy Spirit. My anxiety medication feels like I'm choosing Prozac over prayer. If I really believed God's promises, wouldn't I just have peace?
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety."
-- Proverbs 11:14Religious teaching that positions mental health treatment as faithless instead of as God's provision for the mind.
Church culture often treats therapy as secular weakness and medication as chemical dependence rather than legitimate healthcare. Her need for mental health support feels like spiritual failure compared to others who claim 'God is enough.'
Rehoboam sought counsel from elders who served his father Solomon, demonstrating that even kings needed multiple counselors for wisdom. The tragic outcome came from rejecting good counsel, not from seeking it - proving that wise people actively pursue guidance from others.
I REFUSE the lie that therapy and faith cannot coexist. IT IS WRITTEN that in the multitude of counselors there is safety. My Father gave me a brain with chemistry that sometimes needs support, just like my body sometimes needs antibiotics. My therapist is not my replacement for God - they are God's gift to help me process trauma and rewire broken thought patterns. IT IS WRITTEN in Proverbs 11:14 that seeking counsel is wisdom, not weakness. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and my mental health needs do not disqualify me from His blessing or presence.
Your Father is not standing back with arms crossed waiting for you to pray harder about your anxiety. He RAN toward you with a therapist who understands trauma, with medication that gives your exhausted brain support, with the same compassion He has for every other part of your body that needs care.
