"Godly women should be able to handle everything through prayer, not need pharmaceutical help."
How it sounds in your head: I see the Proverbs 31 woman who never seems anxious or depressed. I see women at church who seem to have peace without pills. What's wrong with me that I can't just pray my way through this? Am I weaker spiritually because I'm a woman who can't handle it?
"For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust."
-- Psalm 103:14Religious femininity standards that add medication shame to existing pressure to be the 'peaceful, gentle, quiet spirit' without support.
She already feels pressure to be nurturing, peaceful, and emotionally stable as a 'godly woman.' Needing medication feels like failing at the emotional labor women are 'naturally' supposed to excel at.
Hannah was so depressed she wept bitterly, couldn't eat, and was 'in bitterness of soul.' After pouring out her heart, she ate and 'her face was no longer sad' - BEFORE her prayer was answered. God provided emotional relief in the process.
I REFUSE the lie that godly women shouldn't need medication. IT IS WRITTEN that God knows my frame and remembers I am dust - physical and limited. He doesn't expect me to transcend my brain chemistry through prayer alone. Hannah experienced deep depression and God met her with comfort BEFORE changing her circumstances. IT IS WRITTEN that I am fearfully and wonderfully made - body, brain, and spirit integrated. My medication doesn't make me less godly; it makes me a wise steward of the body God gave me. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, pill bottle and all.
Your Father is running toward you saying 'I made you HUMAN, beloved, not superhuman - and I love providing for every human need you have.' He's not comparing you to other women; He's celebrating that you're stewarding your health.
