"God won't forgive me because I keep returning to the same sin repeatedly."
How it sounds in your head: It's not just that I sinned—I've confessed this same thing a thousand times over fifty years. The lust, the temper, the pride. At some point God must say 'enough.' I'm like a dog returning to vomit, and there's got to be a limit to mercy.
"Then Peter came to Him and said, 'Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?' Jesus said to him, 'I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.'"
-- Matthew 18:21-22Source: Religion teaches that repetitive sin proves insincerity, ignoring that transformation is God's work through abiding, not willpower through trying harder.
He's genuinely battled the same weaknesses for decades—visual temptation, anger patterns, control issues. Each failure feels like proof he's not really changed, and at seventy he fears he never will. The shame of repetition makes him question if grace really covers the SAME sin the thousandth time.
Israel complained, rebelled, built a golden calf, rejected God's provision, and wanted to return to Egypt REPEATEDLY for forty years—the same patterns of unbelief over and over. Each time Moses interceded, God said 'I have pardoned according to your word'—never saying 'this is the last time' but showing mercy was renewable for the same sins.
I REFUSE the lie that repeated failures exhaust God's forgiveness. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus requires me to forgive 490 times, proving HE forgives infinitely more. Israel rebelled with the SAME unbelief for forty years and God kept pardoning. My struggle with the same weakness doesn't surprise Him or disqualify me. IT IS WRITTEN that where sin abounds, grace abounds MUCH MORE—His grace is always greater than my repetition. I am not under law counting strikes but under grace that covers every failure. The BARAK blessing covered Jacob's repeated deception and Abraham's repeated lies—my covenant in Christ is BETTER.
The Father isn't keeping a tally with a cutoff number—He's reminding you that the battle is His, not yours. Your job is to ABIDE in the vine; His job is to produce fruit. Transformation comes through CONNECTION, not determination to finally get it right through effort.
