"God won't bless me financially while I'm still in debt—I need to get clean first."
How it sounds in your head: You've heard the sermons about being a good steward before God entrusts you with more. How can He bless you when you're not even handling what you have? First get out of debt, then maybe He'll open doors.
"Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him. The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous."
-- Genesis 26:12-13Source: Religious teaching that God's blessing is earned through financial discipline, works-based theology that says you must 'prove yourself' before God moves.
It sounds responsible and biblical—like God is a wise investor who only backs proven performers. Plus, you've seen the Dave Ramsey curriculum at church that basically says this exact thing.
During a famine, Isaac lied to King Abimelech, saying his wife was his sister to protect himself. Instead of withholding blessing until Isaac 'learned his lesson,' God gave him a hundredfold harvest that same year and made him so prosperous that the king asked him to move because his wealth was overwhelming.
I REFUSE the lie that God waits for me to be debt-free before blessing me. IT IS WRITTEN that Isaac lied and God blessed him with hundredfold increase the same year—the blessing wasn't based on his honesty. My blessing is based on COVENANT, not credit report. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 6:14 that I am not under law but under GRACE. The BARAK blessing is mine because I am Abraham's seed through Christ, and that blessing operated even when Abraham lied twice and left richer both times. God doesn't grade my stewardship before releasing provision—He sent Jesus to BE my provision. Blessing flows from His nature, not my performance.
Your Father isn't waiting for you to balance the budget before He blesses you—He blessed Isaac in the middle of a lie and Abraham in the middle of failure. He's not a performance-based investor; He's a Father who lavishes good gifts on His children because of who HE is.
