"God must be punishing my family with debt because of something we did wrong."
How it sounds in your head: Things keep going wrong with money. Unexpected bills, stuff breaks, we can't get ahead. Maybe God is mad at us. Maybe my parents sinned and this is the consequence. We must have done something to deserve this struggle.
"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed."
-- Isaiah 53:5Religion: Old Covenant punishment theology applied to New Covenant believers, denying Jesus took ALL punishment at the cross.
He's learning cause-and-effect, and persistent problems feel like they need an explanation. The idea that suffering is punishment for sin is taught in many churches and seems to make the struggle make sense.
Religious leaders brought a woman caught in adultery (caught IN THE ACT, absolutely guilty, deserving death by law) to Jesus expecting Him to condemn her. Jesus said 'neither do I condemn you' - zero punishment, instant forgiveness, complete release. She deserved death and got life instead. If Jesus wouldn't punish the guilty adulteress, He's not punishing you with financial problems - He took ALL punishment at the cross.
I REFUSE the lie that God is punishing my family with debt! IT IS WRITTEN: The chastisement for my peace was on JESUS - He took the punishment so I could have peace, including financial peace. There is NO condemnation for those in Christ - none, zero, ever. My Father isn't angry; He's running toward me with the BARAK blessing of Abraham. IT IS WRITTEN: The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus came to give ABUNDANT life. Debt comes from the thief, not my Father! Jesus took every curse at the cross, including the curse of poverty in Deuteronomy 28. I stand in the blessing - blessed coming in, blessed going out, blessed in my storehouses. My Father delights in my prosperity, and punishment is OFF THE TABLE forever!
Your Father isn't keeping a record of wrongs and charging interest - Jesus paid it ALL, and now your Father is running with the robe and the ring, celebrating not punishing. He said to the guilty woman 'neither do I condemn you,' and He's saying the same to you about every financial struggle.
