"God must be punishing me or my family with this illness."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe mom or dad did something wrong and I'm paying for it. Or maybe I did something bad I don't even remember. Why else would God let a kid get sick? The church ladies whisper and look at us funny. If God is good, why would He let this happen unless we deserve it?
"Jesus answered, 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.'"
-- John 9:3Religious curse rooted in Old Covenant thinking, making sickness payment for sin despite Jesus already paying in full.
She's been taught cause-effect morality: good behavior equals blessing, bad behavior equals punishment. Sickness must mean somebody messed up, and kids instinctively personalize blame.
The Pharisees watched to see if Jesus would heal on the Sabbath so they could accuse Him. Jesus didn't ask about the man's sin or worthiness; He was ANGRY at their hard hearts and GRIEVED at their religion. He simply said 'Stretch out your hand,' and it was IMMEDIATELY restored. The man did nothing to earn it, deserve it, or prepare for it.
I REFUSE the lie that sickness is punishment from God! IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, and sickness is the devil's work, not my Father's. There is NOW no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus—that's ME. I am NOT being punished; I am being PURSUED by a Father who runs toward sick kids, not away from them. The BARAK blessing covers me even when I mess up, just like it covered Abraham when he LIED and Jacob when he DECEIVED. IT IS WRITTEN that by Jesus' stripes I was healed. He already took the punishment so I could walk in blessing. Sickness has NO LEGAL RIGHT to my body because Jesus paid for my healing at the cross.
Your Father isn't mad at you or your parents. He's madly IN LOVE with you, and He's angry at the sickness the same way Jesus was angry at the Pharisees' religion. He's running toward you with healing, not standing back with a list of your failures.
