"God is withholding until I learn to be content with less."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe this struggle is God teaching me not to be materialistic. Maybe He's keeping me here until I stop wanting more and finally learn contentment. I have to prove I don't need abundance before He'll give it. Wanting breakthrough feels greedy.
"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."
-- 3 John 1:2Religious poverty theology that twists Paul's contentment into God withholding abundance as a character lesson.
You've heard sermons about 'being content in all circumstances' used to spiritualize lack. Wanting financial breakthrough feels like worldliness, and suffering seems more holy than abundance. Poverty feels like the proof of spirituality.
The prodigal came back with NOTHING, having blown everything, prepared to beg for scraps. The father didn't test his contentment with poverty—he IMMEDIATELY gave him the BEST robe, ring, sandals, and killed the fattened calf for a feast.
I REFUSE the lie that God is withholding to teach me contentment with less. IT IS WRITTEN that it's His will for me to prosper in ALL THINGS—not just spiritually, but financially and physically. Jesus came to give ABUNDANT life, not barely-enough life. The prodigal got the BEST robe without a poverty test; Abraham was VERY RICH and it didn't disqualify him. IT IS WRITTEN that I am blessed above only and not beneath, and God takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant (Psalm 35:27). Wanting breakthrough isn't greedy—it's agreeing with my Father's generous heart. I am Abraham's seed, and the BARAK blessing of abundance is mine NOW by covenant, not after I've proven I don't need it.
Your Father isn't making you sit in lack until you stop wanting more—He's the One who threw the party, killed the calf, and gave the BEST robe to the son who deserved nothing. His nature is LAVISH generosity, not withholding tests.
