"God is withholding a spouse because I haven't forgiven/healed/prayed enough."
How it sounds in your head: Maybe if I'd dealt with my father wounds sooner, or if I'd been more faithful in quiet times, or if I'd truly forgiven my ex, God would release this. There must be a block I haven't addressed.
"He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?"
-- Romans 8:32Religious teaching that makes God's gifts conditional on your emotional perfection and spiritual performance.
Every sermon on singleness lists homework: forgive, heal, become whole, wait on the Lord. It feels like there's a checklist you haven't completed, and God is holding back until you do.
Jacob the deceiver, who stole his brother's blessing through lies and manipulation, cried out to God for protection while still running from consequences. God didn't say 'heal first'—He wrestled with him, blessed him, changed his name, and gave him the promises IMMEDIATELY despite his unresolved dysfunction.
I REFUSE the lie that God is withholding good things until I perform better, heal faster, or forgive perfectly. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:32 that He who gave His Son FREELY gives all things—not conditionally, not after a process, but FREELY. God is not a withholder waiting for my perfection; He is a Father who RAN toward the prodigal while he still stank of pigs. IT IS WRITTEN that there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus—no block, no barrier, no spiritual homework keeping His goodness from me. I am under the BARAK blessing, receiving not by works but by grace. I receive His gifts NOW, not when I'm 'ready.'
The Father isn't holding a spouse hostage until you complete healing homework—He's already given you His Son, and with Him, ALL things freely. He's not waiting for you to be perfect; He's inviting you into the fullness of His goodness today, right in the middle of your process.
