"God is punishing me with mental illness because of past sin"
How it sounds in your head: I struggled with an eating disorder, slept with my ex, partied too hard freshman year. Maybe this depression is God's way of teaching me a lesson. I brought this on myself and now I have to suffer the consequences.
"Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:14Old covenant thinking that ties sickness to punishment, ignoring the finished work of the cross.
She's heard sermons about reaping and sowing, and her mental health crash came after a season of walking away from God. The timing makes it feel like divine payback.
Disciples asked if the blind man's condition was caused by his sin or his parents' sin. Jesus said NEITHER—'that the works of God should be revealed in him.' Sickness wasn't punishment; it was an opportunity for God's glory.
I REFUSE the lie that God is punishing me with mental illness. IT IS WRITTEN that the handwriting against me was nailed to the cross—my past is PAID FOR. There is NO condemnation for me in Christ Jesus. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ redeemed me from the CURSE, and mental illness is not God's discipline. The BARAK blessing covers me, just like it covered Abraham when he lied, Isaac when he lied, Jacob when he deceived. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, REGARDLESS of my history.
The Father isn't holding your past over your head. He's holding you, whispering that the cross already dealt with every sin, and your depression is not His punishment.
