"God has forgiven me, but I cannot forgive myself for what I've done."
How it sounds in your head: You destroyed that relationship. You failed your kids when they needed you most. You can remember every detail of what you did wrong—how can you just let yourself off the hook? That would be arrogant. God may have forgiven you, but you know what you did.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Religion taught that godliness requires ongoing self-punishment and that letting go of guilt is presumptuous pride.
Decades of memories replay with painful clarity, and the weight feels like appropriate penance for real failures. Letting go feels like minimizing genuine harm done to people you love.
Peter denied Jesus THREE times with cursing, then watched Him die knowing his betrayal was the last thing between them. Jesus didn't make him grovel—He asked 'Do you love Me?' three times, restoring him INSTANTLY with the mission to feed His sheep.
I REFUSE the lie that I must hold myself hostage to forgiven sin. IT IS WRITTEN that Jesus wiped out EVERY charge against me and nailed it to His cross. If the Judge has acquitted me, I will not retry the case in my own courtroom. I am the righteousness of God in Christ—not because I feel it, but because HIS blood speaks better than my failure. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. I stand in the BARAK blessing of Abraham—the covenant that covered liars, deceivers, and murderers because it was based on PROMISE, not performance. I am forgiven, cleansed, and restored RIGHT NOW.
The Father isn't waiting for you to feel worthy—He's already running toward you with the robe and ring. While you were rehearsing your disqualifications, He was planning your restoration party, because His love isn't based on your record but on His nature.
