"God forgave me, but I can't forgive myself for what I did"
How it sounds in your head: I know theologically God forgave me, but I still see it every time I look in the mirror. I can't move forward until I feel like I've forgiven myself. It's like there's this last step I can't take.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Source: Religion teaching that God's forgiveness isn't complete until you 'do your part' by forgiving yourself—making HIS finished work dependent on YOUR emotional state.
You carry a visceral shame that theology hasn't touched—your body remembers even when your mind knows better. The inability to 'feel' forgiven makes you question if you've truly received it, as if God's declaration needs your emotional validation to be real.
Peter denied Jesus THREE TIMES with cursing, then Jesus appeared and didn't even mention the denial—just asked 'Do you love Me?' three times and IMMEDIATELY reinstated him to 'Feed My sheep.' No self-forgiveness process, no probation period, instant restoration to ministry.
I REFUSE the lie that God's forgiveness needs my emotional agreement to be complete. IT IS WRITTEN that He has forgiven ALL my trespasses and wiped out every charge against me—past, present, future. I am not the judge of my own case; HE is, and He declared me RIGHTEOUS by the blood. IT IS WRITTEN that there is NOW no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus—not 'no condemnation once you forgive yourself.' I receive what He GAVE—complete, total, irrevocable forgiveness. The BARAK blessing of Abraham rests on me NOT because I feel worthy but because I am IN CHRIST. I am the righteousness of God in Him, and I walk in the FREEDOM He purchased.
The Father isn't waiting for you to 'complete' what Jesus finished—He's celebrating that it's DONE. He sees you through the blood, not through your emotions, and He's running toward you with the robe and ring while you're still rehearsing your unworthiness speech.
