"God allowed the divorce as punishment for my past sins and failures."
How it sounds in your head: I wasn't perfect in that marriage. I made mistakes, said things I regret, maybe had wandering eyes or emotional distance. God must have let the marriage fall apart to teach me a lesson about my sin.
"And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross."
-- Colossians 2:13-14Source: Enemy twisting Romans 6:23 ('wages of sin is death') to make God the punisher rather than the Redeemer, contradicting John 3:17 that Jesus came to save, not condemn.
He remembers specific sins during the marriage and connects them to the divorce outcome, assuming God operates on karma-like retribution. Religious teaching about 'reaping what you sow' makes this seem doctrinally sound.
David committed adultery with Bathsheba and murdered her husband Uriah—far worse than any divorce-related sin. God forgave him completely, kept him as king, and made him the forefather of Jesus. The blessing didn't leave.
I REFUSE the lie that God punished me with divorce. IT IS WRITTEN that He has forgiven ALL my trespasses and nailed every accusation to the cross. God is not an angry judge waiting to strike; He's a loving Father running toward me. IT IS WRITTEN in John 3:17 that God didn't send Jesus to condemn but to save. I am not under curse but under GRACE. The blood of Jesus speaks better things than my failures. My Father's nature is redemption, not retribution. I stand in Romans 8:1—NO condemnation—and I receive His love that never fails, never punishes, never holds grudges.
Your Father didn't engineer your divorce to teach you a lesson. He was grieving with you through it, and He's been working to bring beauty from ashes the entire time. He sees you through Jesus—totally forgiven, fully loved, completely free.
