"Everyone else stayed sharp. I'm losing my mind and becoming someone no one recognizes."
How it sounds in your head: You forget names, lose track of conversations, can't remember what you did yesterday. You see other men your age still reading, still sharp, still themselves. But you're slipping away, and the terror is that you'll become someone your family doesn't even know. You're disappearing while others remain.
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day."
-- 2 Corinthians 4:16Enemy fear of identity loss mixed with comparison to external appearances of others' mental capacity.
Memory issues are terrifying and feel like losing yourself. Seeing peers who seem mentally intact while experiencing his own decline creates shame and fear of becoming a burden no one recognizes.
Zechariah couldn't speak or hear for NINE MONTHS—totally cut off from communication—yet God was doing the GREATEST WORK of his life inside that silence. When his voice returned, it returned with PROPHECY. Your mind is not the measure of God's work in you.
I REFUSE the lie that I'm losing myself because my mind is failing. IT IS WRITTEN: Though the outward man is perishing, the inward man is being renewed DAY BY DAY. My identity is not in my memory—it's in CHRIST. IT IS WRITTEN: My life is hidden with Christ in God. I am fully known by Him even if I can't remember breakfast. I am not disappearing—I am becoming MORE AWARE of my true identity as a spirit being. The real me is ETERNAL, UNCHANGING, SECURE in Him. Comparison to others is a lie—I am exactly where He has me.
The Father knows your name even when you forget others'. He sees the REAL you—the spirit being made in His image—and that person is more alive and known than ever, regardless of what the brain does. He's not comparing you to sharp minds at the facility—He's delighting in the childlike dependence that's drawing you closer to Him than you've ever been.
