"Church won't accept me. I'll never belong in Christian community again because of my divorce."
How it sounds in your head: I sit in the back row because walking in feels like everyone knows my story. Small group questions about 'your spouse' or 'your family' make me want to disappear. The women's ministry marriage retreats, the couples' dinners, the sermons about covenant—it all feels like a club I've been kicked out of. I don't fit in the singles group (I have kids) or the marrieds (I'm divorced). I'm in no man's land.
"Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God."
-- Ephesians 2:19Source: Religious segregation that divides the Body of Christ by marital status instead of by BLOOD OF JESUS, creating Pharisaical hierarchies that Jesus died to destroy.
Church programming is often built around nuclear families—couples' ministries, family camps, marriage conferences—leaving divorced individuals feeling like misfits. At 22, watching your former friends attend couples' events while you're excluded confirms the lie that Christian community has an entrance requirement you no longer meet. The awkward questions and pitying looks cement the isolation.
Single mom in a foreign land during famine, down to her last meal, preparing to eat and die with her son. God sent ELIJAH to her house—not to the married couples, not to the intact families, but to the WIDOW. Her home became the site of supernatural provision (oil and flour that never ran out) and her son's resurrection from the dead.
I REFUSE the lie that I don't belong in God's family. IT IS WRITTEN that I am a FELLOW CITIZEN with the saints and a MEMBER of the household of God—present tense, no conditions. My place at the table isn't based on my marital status; it's based on the BLOOD OF JESUS. IT IS WRITTEN that there is ONE BODY and ONE SPIRIT, and I am PART OF THAT BODY. The BARAK blessing flows through me because I am Abraham's seed through Christ, and no church culture can revoke what GOD has granted. I am not an outsider looking in—I am FAMILY, fully accepted, fully welcomed, fully HOME.
The Father isn't checking your marital status at the door. He's saving you a seat at the table with your NAME on it. You're not a guest in His house—you're a DAUGHTER, and daughters don't need permission to be home. The church may not know what to do with you, but HE does: hold you close and remind you that belonging is a BIRTHRIGHT, not a reward.
