"Christians shouldn't depend on anything except God, so medication is idolatry."
How it sounds in your head: I'm making pills my god instead of trusting the true God. Dependence on medication is misplaced dependence. If I really trusted God, I wouldn't need this chemical crutch. This is functional atheism.
"For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving."
-- 1 Timothy 4:4Source: Religion - misapplying dependence language, confusing trust in God with rejection of His provision through natural means.
You've heard sermons about not putting confidence in chariots and horses but in God alone. Taking daily medication feels like you're saying God isn't enough. If you really believed He was sufficient, wouldn't you be able to quit these pills?
God revealed famine was coming and could have supernaturally fed Israel for seven years. Instead, He worked through Joseph's administrative wisdom to stockpile grain - a completely natural solution to a divinely revealed problem. God's provision came through planning and storage, not manna from heaven, and He got equal glory.
I REFUSE the lie that medication is idolatry. IT IS WRITTEN that everything God created is good when received with thanksgiving, and medical science is His gift to humanity. God fed Israel through Joseph's grain storage, not just supernatural manna - both were His provision. Taking medication isn't misplaced trust; it's RECEIVING what the Provider sends. IT IS WRITTEN that we should pray for daily bread - physical provision isn't idolatry. I depend on God, who provides through multiple streams. My prescription bottle is evidence of His care, not competition with His sufficiency.
The Father isn't jealous of your medication, threatened by your psychiatrist. He's the one who gave them the knowledge to help you, running toward you with provision in every form - natural and supernatural, simple and spectacular.
