"Christians can't have demons, so these dark thoughts mean I was never truly saved."
How it sounds in your head: If I'm really born again, I shouldn't experience this level of mental attack and darkness. The pastor said Christians can't have demons, so maybe I was never saved to begin with. Fifty years of faith might have been a lie if I'm experiencing this oppression now.
"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places."
-- Ephesians 6:12Religious teaching creating false dichotomy—either you're perfectly free or never saved—ignoring that believers can experience external harassment without internal possession.
You've heard teaching that true Christians are immune to demonic influence, so experiencing oppression makes you question your entire salvation history. The presence of darkness feels incompatible with the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Paul, the greatest apostle, wrote that he was given 'a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.' A fully saved, Holy Spirit-filled apostle experienced demonic harassment—not because he wasn't saved, but because he was a kingdom threat.
I REFUSE the lie that experiencing spiritual attack means I was never saved. IT IS WRITTEN: WE wrestle against rulers and cosmic powers of darkness—Paul is writing to BELIEVERS about THEIR wrestling. I am not oppressed because I'm unsaved; I'm attacked because I AM a blood-bought son and hell is furious. IT IS WRITTEN: the devil prowls seeking whom he may devour—he seeks believers who are threats to his kingdom. Even Paul, the greatest apostle, had a messenger of Satan harassing him, and nobody questioned his salvation. My salvation is not based on the absence of attack but on the finished work of Jesus Christ. I am sealed with the Holy Spirit, and no amount of external harassment changes my internal reality: I am a son, purchased by blood, and my name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
Your Father isn't questioning your salvation because you're experiencing attack—He's cheering that hell is nervous enough about you to deploy its weapons. The same Jesus who never doubted Paul's salvation despite demonic harassment never doubts yours, and He's saying, 'You're Mine, and every attack proves you're a threat to darkness.'
