"Asking God for financial help is selfish—I should only pray for spiritual things and others' needs."
How it sounds in your head: Real Christians pray for the lost and for character growth, not for help with car payments. If I ask for money, I'm carnal and materialistic. God must be disappointed that I care about bills when people are dying without Jesus.
"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!"
-- Matthew 7:11Source: Religious shame that labels material needs as unspiritual, making believers feel guilty for having practical needs.
She's heard sermons glorifying poverty and spiritualizing lack, making her feel shallow for needing provision. Every prayer meeting focuses on missions and salvation, never bills and groceries.
Jabez prayed 'enlarge my territory'—a bold material request for MORE land, wealth, influence. God didn't rebuke him for being selfish—God GRANTED his request immediately because He delights in blessing His children.
I REFUSE the lie that asking for provision is selfish. IT IS WRITTEN that my Father gives GOOD THINGS to those who ask Him—and I am His daughter, not an orphan managing alone. Jesus taught me to pray 'give us THIS DAY our DAILY BREAD'—practical, material, daily provision. IT IS WRITTEN that Jabez asked for enlarged territory and God GRANTED it without rebuke. I am under the BARAK blessing where Abraham got richer even when he LIED. My Father doesn't shame me for having needs—He invites me to ask largely. I receive financial provision NOW because my Father is GOOD and gives good gifts to His children. Asking isn't selfish—it's sonship.
The Father doesn't want you to pretend you don't need provision—He wants you to run to Him WITH your needs like a daughter, not away from Him in shame. Like the prodigal's father who loved giving the robe, ring, and feast, your Father LOVES providing for you.
