"All the other girls already know how to dress and look right—I'll never figure it out and I'll always look awkward."
How it sounds in your head: You see them with the right outfits, the right hair, the right everything, and you don't know how they knew what to do. You feel like you're wearing a costume and everyone can tell you don't belong. Your clothes are wrong, your style is wrong, you're wrong. They all figured it out at the same time and you missed the memo. Now you'll always be the one who doesn't fit.
"Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God."
-- 1 Peter 3:3-4World—fashion industry and comparison culture that creates arbitrary rules about 'right' appearance and makes you feel permanently excluded if you don't instinctively know them.
At 10-12, girls are just becoming aware of 'style' as a thing, and some seem to have a natural instinct while others feel clueless. When you feel like everyone else got instructions you didn't receive, it seems like you're permanently behind in an unspoken competition.
Esther was an orphaned Jewish girl competing with the most beautiful women in the Persian empire who had 12 MONTHS of beauty treatments. Esther only requested what the king's eunuch advised (she didn't try to figure it out herself), and 'Esther obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her'—favor wasn't about having superior fashion sense, it was a GIFT.
I REFUSE the lie that I'll always be awkward because I don't instinctively know how to dress 'right.' IT IS WRITTEN that what's precious to God is the hidden person of the heart, not outward appearance. I am not competing with other girls in a fashion contest. IT IS WRITTEN in Proverbs 31:30 that charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised. I am covered by the BARAK blessing which includes FAVOR. I receive favor that has nothing to do with getting outfits right.
The Father isn't disappointed in your wardrobe—He's looking at your HEART and calling it VERY PRECIOUS. While you're stressed about looking awkward, He's seeing beauty in you that doesn't depend on clothes or hair or knowing the 'rules,' and He's giving you favor that has nothing to do with fashion sense.
