"Tithing was Old Testament law, not New Testament grace"
How it sounds in your head: You've heard the teaching that tithing was part of the Mosaic law that Jesus fulfilled, so now you give 'as you purpose in your heart.' It sounds theologically sound, gives you freedom to manage your money wisely, and relieves the pressure of that 10% when you're staring down college debt and aging parent care.
"Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives."
-- Hebrews 7:8Religious teaching that uses grace as excuse to withhold honor, mixing truth with self-protection.
You can find Bible teachers who argue tithing ended with the law, and it gives theological permission to keep more for yourself. At this stage of life with so many financial pressures pulling at you, a teaching that says 'give what feels right' feels like wisdom and freedom combined.
Abraham gave Melchizedek (priest of the Most High God) a tenth of ALL the spoils after a military victory - this happened 430 years before Moses received the law. The moment he honored God's priest with the tithe, he received BREAD and WINE (communion elements) and a blessing that made him father of nations.
I REFUSE the lie that tithing was only Old Testament law abolished at the cross. IT IS WRITTEN in Hebrews 7:8 that JESUS HIMSELF, who LIVES, receives tithes even now. Abraham tithed before the law, I tithe under the BETTER covenant. IT IS WRITTEN that I am Abraham's seed and heir according to the promise (Galatians 3:29). The BARAK blessing that protected Abraham even when he lied is mine by covenant, not by law. I don't tithe to earn blessing - I tithe because I'm ALREADY blessed and I honor the One who blessed me. My tithe is worship, not works.
The Father didn't abolish honor when He fulfilled the law - He elevated it from obligation to relationship. Your heavenly Father isn't tracking your 10% like a tax collector; He's watching for the heart of a daughter who trusts Him enough to honor Him first, and He's already prepared windows of heaven to open over your life.
