"Their debt isn't my responsibility; they brought this into the marriage."
How it sounds in your head: I worked hard to be debt-free before we got married. Their student loans, their credit cards—that was their choice. Why should I sacrifice my financial freedom for their past mistakes?
"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."
-- Ephesians 5:31Enemy accusation—the same spirit that makes us separate 'their sin' from 'my sin' as if we're not all covered by the same blood.
The debt existed before you, feels unfair, and threatens the financial independence you worked hard to build. Your sense of justice says you shouldn't pay for someone else's choices.
God told Hosea to marry Gomer, a prostitute with a past full of debt and betrayal. When she later sold herself into slavery, God commanded Hosea to BUY HER BACK—to pay for debts she created, mistakes she made, consequences of her choices. Hosea paid 15 shekels of silver and provisions to redeem her, and God used this as a picture of how HE redeems us—paying for debts we created, covering messes we made.
I REFUSE the lie that my spouse's debt isn't my responsibility. IT IS WRITTEN that two become ONE FLESH in marriage—not selective unity, COMPLETE unity. Just as Christ didn't distinguish between my pre-salvation debt and post-salvation debt but PAID IT ALL, I embrace covenant love that covers everything. IT IS WRITTEN that Christ redeemed me from the curse so the BLESSING OF ABRAHAM could come upon me—a blessing so powerful it turned 400 years of slavery into overnight wealth, so generous it made Abraham rich even after lying. That same BARAK is on my marriage, on our combined finances, on every debt we face TOGETHER. We are blessed coming in and going out, and the Lord commands blessing on everything we set our hand to.
Your Father isn't dividing up responsibility percentages in heaven. He's looking at a covenant union and pouring out blessing on BOTH of you—the same way He blessed you before you deserved it, the same way He's been covering your messes since before you knew His name.
