"Relying on sleeping pills shows I don't have peace with God."
How it sounds in your head: The Bible says He gives His beloved sleep. Why am I lying awake at 3 AM needing a pill to quiet my mind? After all these years of faith, shouldn't I have the peace that passes understanding without chemical help?
"I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety."
-- Psalm 4:8Teaching that insomnia reveals hidden sin or lack of trust, adding spiritual shame to the physical exhaustion of sleeplessness.
Scripture promises peace and rest to believers, so chronic insomnia feels like personal spiritual failure. At 82, with a mind that won't stop replaying worries and losses, needing medication to sleep feels like proof God's peace isn't 'enough.'
When God needed to do deep work in Adam's life (creating Eve), He caused a deep sleep to fall on him. God HIMSELF administered the first anesthesia. God has always used medically-induced rest to accomplish His purposes.
I REFUSE the lie that my sleeping medication reveals lack of peace with God. IT IS WRITTEN that the Lord HIMSELF makes me dwell in safety and gives sleep to His beloved. God caused Adam to sleep deeply when He had work to do. My medication is the Father's provision for a nervous system affected by decades of stress, grief, and physiological changes. IT IS WRITTEN that there is no condemnation for me in Christ Jesus. The BARAK blessing includes REST in every form—natural, medical, and supernatural. I receive sleep as a GIFT, however it comes, without shame.
Your Father sees you lying awake counting the hours until dawn, mind racing through decades of memories and current fears. He doesn't scold you for needing help—He runs toward you with the medication as a lullaby, saying 'Rest now, beloved. Let this quiet your mind. I'm standing watch.'
