"Real Christians shouldn't need therapy or medication for mental health issues."
How it sounds in your head: You're supposed to be the spiritual leader of your home, but you can't even keep it together mentally. What kind of man needs pills to function? Your wife and kids deserve someone stronger. Just pray harder and man up.
"The LORD is near to those who have a brokenhearted, and saves such as have a contrite spirit."
-- Psalm 34:18Religion spirit suggesting God's grace insufficient for biological/neurological realities, making Christ's finished work incomplete.
Every sermon emphasizes 'peace that passes understanding' and 'joy of the Lord,' making your struggle feel like spiritual failure. Other men seem fine, and admitting mental struggle feels like admitting you're defective as a provider and protector.
Elijah, after defeating 450 prophets, experienced suicidal depression, asking God to take his life. God didn't rebuke him or quote Scripture at him—He gave him SLEEP, FOOD, and angelic care, then a new assignment.
I REFUSE the lie that my mental struggle disqualifies me from God's presence or plan. IT IS WRITTEN that the Lord is NEAR to the brokenhearted—not distant, not disappointed, but NEAR. My brain is fearfully and wonderfully made, and whether I need therapy, medication, or both, I am STILL righteous in Christ. IT IS WRITTEN in Romans 8:1 there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus—not for depression, not for anxiety, not for needing help. I am Abraham's seed, heir to the BARAK blessing that protected even those who struggled. The Father is running toward my struggle with compassion, not away from it in disgust. I am His beloved son RIGHT NOW, broken mind and all.
The Father sees you struggling to hold everything together and doesn't say 'pray more'—He says 'I've got you, beloved son.' He's already prepared the help you need (therapy, medication, rest) and is celebrating that you're seeking healing, not condemning that you need it.
