"My parents' toxic relationship taught me nothing good; I can't model healthy love."
How it sounds in your head: I never saw affection growing up. Just screaming or silence. Now my husband reaches for my hand and I flinch. I don't know how to receive love because I never learned. My childhood stole my ability to have a healthy marriage.
"The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: 'Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.'"
-- Jeremiah 31:3Source: trauma - Past deprivation masquerades as permanent disability to receive love and intimacy.
You have no reference point for healthy intimacy. Your internal responses were shaped by years of witnessing toxicity. The flinching, the walls, the emotional distance feel hardwired.
Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector—hated, isolated, relationally bankrupt, no model for connection. One meal with Jesus and he instantly became generous, relational, and restored. Jesus' presence rewired his relational capacity immediately. 'Today salvation has come to this house.'
I REFUSE the lie that my parents' toxic relationship disqualified me from healthy intimacy. IT IS WRITTEN that God has loved me with an everlasting love and with lovingkindness draws me. I am not learning love from my childhood—I am learning it from the Father right now. The Holy Spirit is my teacher, and He can show me in one moment what my parents never showed me in eighteen years. IT IS WRITTEN that we love because He first loved us. His love in me CREATES the capacity to receive and give love. I am not damaged goods; I am a new creation with new relational wiring. My marriage is under the BARAK—blessed in intimacy, blessed in connection, blessed in affection.
The Father doesn't see you as 'too broken to love well.' He sees you as Zacchaeus—one encounter away from complete relational restoration. He's not waiting for you to heal through process; He's teaching you love in real-time, replacing every broken template with His perfect love.
